Organic Arabica from the Lower Pulney Hills.
Pachalur, Lower Pulney Hills, Tamil Nadu.
The farm
Laks Farm sits at about 1,500 metres in the Lower Pulney Hills, one of the few parts of India with the altitude and climate for Arabica.
It is run by H.R. Iyer, a mechanical engineer who became a self-taught farmer after he retired. The farm is organic, with no harmful chemicals or pesticides. Farm waste goes back into the soil as manure, the farm’s cows supply more, and its bees take care of pollination.
The coffee grows alongside cardamom, black pepper, turmeric, ginger, avocado, jackfruit, oranges and bananas. Cherries are picked by hand and processed on the farm. Pulneys is the older name for the Palani Hills, in the southern Western Ghats of Tamil Nadu.
